Purpose is a word that can mean different things to different people. For some it is an intentionality to act, strive or achieve through behaviours.
A person might say that it is their purpose to use their skills and talents to make a positive contribution in the world.
An organisation might state that their purpose is to use their resources and assets to make a positive contribution in the world.
We believe that purpose is associated with contentedness that comes from using our skills and talents in line with our beliefs and values, stimulated by our passion and drive. We do not believe that this is limited to a statement or the description of one’s purpose, more that there is an alignment and feeling of connection. The Dalai Lama described his purpose as, “to be happy and useful”
IKIGAI is a Japanese philosophy that describes one’s meaning, internal motivation and balance in the world. If someone is living with a positive connection to IKIGAI then they will experience contentedness.
Recently IKIGAI has been associated with purpose and there are many similarities. The IKIGAI model illustrates a confluence of Mission, Passion, Profession and Vocation: operating in harmony and using each of these four elements in balance brings harmony and happiness.
We believe that IKIGAI is an intentional pursuit that places choice at the centre of what we do. If we are sufficiently aware of our what and why and we are open to our heart, our three brains (cardiac, enteric, cranial) and the small voice of intuition, then we are able to discern how to respond to the world around us. Therefore out intention is to live with connection and awareness , responding to stimulus guided by our IKIGAI.
We are energised and fuelled by internal and external sources of energy (some might refer to this as introverted and extroverted). If we neglect our fuelling and energy then like any other organism or mechanism we start to starve and we operate inefficiently.
We believe that the human spirit is sustained through connections and conditions; connections to nature, community, a higher purpose, meaningful work and future, reconciled past as examples.
Understanding and maintaining our energy connections is vital to healthy, happy and balanced life.
